been sick to my stomach too many days now.
when you roll your eyes and try to go to sleep and shake your head when we talk about human rights and poverty and homeless and sex trafficking and on and on it makes me want to scream.
intelligence and wisdom come in many shapes and forms. feel lucky that i have been able to meet so many different people with some many different ways of being wise and intelligent.
the caption of the photo at the top of the article is, “An Atlanta motorcycle officer falters as he drives toward a crowd of protesters at Occupy Atlanta’s Nov. 5 demonstration downtown.” which is not accurate. the comments below address this really well.
OCCUPY ATLANTA
Last night, I went to Troy Davis Park full of excitement. Colby, as usual, went with me, as well as Katie, his girlfriend/my college roommate. I had been looking forward to the reoccupation for a couple of weeks now and I was especially excited, because it was a weekend— so, if…
New research is pointing to a possible link between contraception use and decreased sex drive. The Indiana University study examined the negative effects of contraception on things like arousal, lubrication, and orgasm. Involved were 1,101 sexually…

An interesting and informative opinion piece provided by Dr David Batstone, co-founder and president of Not For Sale, and professor at the School of Management at the University of San Francisco, detailing how the very real forms of bondage contradicts our “sense of modern history and moral progress”. He examines the issue of slavery after having learnt that slavery very well reaches across the globe to one’s “own backyard”.
Dr Batstone writes this after having established his own agency, Not For Sale, where they undertook the task of creating a consumer tool, Free2Work, that “provides data and transparency to the supply chains of products that sit on the shelves of retain stores we frequent”.
Free2Work assigns a product a grade- A to F- based on the tangible steps that a company has taken to demonstrate that it has zero tolerance to forced labour in its supply chain. The 50 factors that go into evaluating the grade encompass protocols that pertain to transparency in a supply chain, a sold code of conduct, monitoring its implementation, and remediation when violations do occur.
Such technology, available as an app on the Android and iPhone, may allow one to finally learn the story behind the product. Simply said, walk into a store and scan the price tag.

-ABOT
The UN states that any country restricting a woman’s access to abortion and/or contraception is, in doing so, violating a woman’s human rights.
….finally.
So, we’ve got extremely reputable cancer-related organizations saying abortion doesn’t cause cancer or increase your risk.
We’ve got extremely reputable reports declaring post-abortion depression to be a hoax.
We’ve got extremely reputable reports showing how many women die from lack of safe, legal abortions.
And now we have the UN stating that ANY and ALL restrictions to the right to choose, to have knowledge, and to have contraception is a violation of human rights.
Your move, Anti-Choicers. Try not to use slavery, the Holocaust, or the Bible.
Awake & unafraid.: Dear anti-choicers:
I probably won’t get a response but I have to ask…
Do you also support a man’s right to refuse paternal responsibility? As…
While many people would (fairly or not) disagree with Amber’s decision to give oral sex at 14; it’s pretty telling of society’s view of women that the criminal act of distributing this video is being overlooked in order to slut-shame a young woman. Amber, in the eyes of many, is the monster here, not the kids who exploited her. And why aren’t we talking about the boy receiving oral sex, too?
It’s easy to label Amber as just another slutty girl who was looking for attention. When we position her as a “bad girl” it’s easy to think that she’s not our child, or sister, or cousin, or best friend’s sibling — or maybe even just like ourselves.
I knew plenty of people who were doing what Amber did when I was 14 — and I’m willing to bet that plenty of you did, too. The only difference is that our exploits were shared only via gossipy whispers rather than via YouTube. This new risk — and Amber’s heartbreaking story — proves that parents of young boys need to be teach their sons, now even more than ever, that female bodies and female sexuality are not theirs for the taking… or taping.

Lost in the bedlam of last nite’s miltary-style police attack on Occupy Oakland protesters was the fact that the Mayor of Atlanta — in an apparent about-face — ordered the police to raid and evict protesters from the Occupy Atlanta camp.
The American capitalist system is simply incapable of abiding any sustained protest to the authority of the 1% who rule this country.
===
With helicopters hovering overhead, police moved into a downtown Atlanta park and arrested around 50 Occupy Wall Street protesters who had been encamped there for about two weeks early Wednesday.
… Police included SWAT teams in riot gear, dozens of officers on motorcycles and several on horseback. By about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday the park was mostly cleared of protesters.
State Sen. Vincent Fort was among those arrested and had come to the park in support of the protesters in recent days. He said the police presence was “overkill.”
“He’s using all these resources … This is the most peaceful place in Georgia,” Fort said, referring to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. “At the urging of the business community, he’s moving people out. Shame on him.”
Trebilcock seems to think the company is being edgy and cool. “Women get the joke,” he said. “‘Is this really for men or really for women?’ is a way to start the conversation that can spread and get people engaged in the product.”
There’s a glaring flaw in this logic: anyone with his or her gender listed as “female” on Facebook can’t access the Dr. Pepper Ten application. They can, however, “like” the Facebook page. It encourages them to read the Ten Man’ments, which include such fabulously gender-satirical things like “thou shalt not OMG” and “thou shalt not make a man-gagement album” because you know, your lady totally forced you into marriage and you shouldn’t be proud of it at all! Haha, aren’t gender stereotypes fun, guys?! Guys?
There are people who will see this ad campaign and read this blog and think that we’re overreacting or that we somehow don’t get it. This is harmless, it’s just a joke. Don’t you have a sense of humor? Yes. I do. I have a fabulous sense of humor, thanks for asking! But I find things funny that are actually funny, not reinforcing social norms that are painful and constrictive for most of the population, whatever gender they may happen to be.
