Bail Fund For Those Arrested By Durham Riot Police
On December 19th, several protesters were arrested at a prayer vigil commemorating the life of Jesús Huerta, a 17 year old teen who was killed while handcuffed in police custody one month earlier.
Between 200-300 people attended the peaceful prayer vigil. Family, friends and supporters were just leaving the police headquarters when riot police declared the demonstration unlawful. They then charged into the crowd with raise batons and tore down a 60-feet-long banner that read “Jesús Huerta, Murdered By Police, Fue Matado Por La Policía" (video).
Despite media reports, the demonstrators were not violent prior to the police attack and several videos exists on the web to confirm this.
After the police charge, a bottle was thrown by a protester. Riot cops responded with deploying tear gas. Protesters quickly dispersed after the short street battle but unfortunately, a few were arrested.
Organizers of the protests have started a bail fund. The total cost for bail for all people involved is $850.
Any extra money we will use money for more legal help and the creation of an emergency bail fund for future marches, which will be held every 19th of the month.
If you can, please donate to the bail fund.
